Your office job can put a strain on an already hurting back.  Here are some tips for getting by at work:

  • Every 20 or 30 minutes change position by standing up or sitting down.
  • Try doing some of your work on a counter, giving your back a break from sitting.
  • Use an ergonomical chair. A good chair will have lumbar support for the contour of your low back. A woven material will fit your body better than a cushioned or padded chair.  The chair should also pivot and move easily with your body.
  • Pass on lifting heavy objects, like refilling the water cooler.
  • To pick up objects, bend at the knees not the back.
  • A good day’s work starts with a good night’s sleep. Get 7-8 hours of rest the night before and use a sleeping position that doesn’t hurt your back.
  • Don’t forget the long commute to work. Take advantage of the lumbar support in your car seat if you have one.  If you don’t have one, they can be purchased for use in your car.
