If you are like most people that work in an office environment, you spend most of your day working at a desk.  Most people don’t realize it, but sitting places more pressure on your low back than almost any other posture.  Here are some key things to know about choosing the right office chair:

  • A good chair needs to have adequate lumbar support. The lumbar spine, also known as the low back, has a natural curvature to it.  This part of the spine is naturally supposed to be concave at the surface.  Your chair needs to be able to support this curve.
  • Middle back (thoracic) support is important too. The mid back has a convex curve at its surface.  A good chair will have a curve that transitions up and down its length to support both the lumbar and thoracic curve.
  • A sloped seat will take pressure off the back of your thighs. This improves circulation and takes pressure off of the sciatic nerve.
  • A woven material is more effective at matching the contours of your body than cushions or padded material.
  • You are going to want a chair that is easy to move around in. It should be easy to tilt, pivot and roll.
