We all look forward to a nice vacation.  Usually the more exotic the vacation the farther we have to fly.  Sitting in a cramped seat can be hard on you if you suffer from back pain.  Here are some ideas on how to land at your destination ready to have the vacation you deserve:

  • First, the obvious. If you are fortunate enough to be able to upgrade to business or first class-do it.  Those seats can essentially recline to a laying down position.  For the rest of us not so fortunate, read on.
  • If you meet the requirements (able to assist in an emergency and move obstructions) select an emergency exit row seat. The extra room will make it easier to get in and out of your chair and will allow you to change posture more easily.
  • Don’t sit in front of the emergency exit row, you won’t be able to recline your chair.
  • Pick an aisle seat. Not only is it easier to get out of but you won’t have to disturb fellow passengers every time you want to stand and stretch.
  • As long as it’s safe, stand up in the aisle once or twice an hour and stretch your legs. You can briefly stand by your seat (as long as you are not obstructing flight crew or passengers) or you can walk towards the lavoratory where the crew usually congregates.  Once there, explain to the crew that your back hurts and you need to stand and stretch. They will generally understand as long as it is safe.
  • While standing, you can stretch your upper back by pushing against the bulkhead (airplane wall).
  • Many neck travel pillows and lumbar supports are available. Try them at home before a long flight.
  • Eye shades and noise cancelling headphones may aid the transition to a relaxed nap. Walk and stretch after your nap to avoid pain from being in one position too long.
  • Use roller luggage and don’t over pack. You and your back are going to have to deal with your luggage.
  • Bring cash for tips. Taxi drivers and hotel staff will be happy to deal with your luggage for you but deserve a tip for having to lift and carry your bags.
  • If you use medicines for pain and spasm, bring them on your trip.
