Herbs are substances derived from leaves, seeds or flowers.  Herbal remedies are used for their potential therapeutic properties.  Scientists have studied many herbs in order to validate their potential health benefits.  Here’s a list of the most studied substances used for treating conditions like back pain:

  • Capsaicin is an active component of chile pepper and desensitizes pain prone skin receptors. 
  • Arnica contains an herb from a European flower and is felt to possess anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Acai comes from the Acai palm tree, native to Central and South America.  The tree produces a berry.  Laboratory studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties of this herb.
  • Cat’s Claw is especially prevalent in the Amazon rainforest.  Small studies have shown possible benefit in arthritis.
  • Cranberry may have antioxidant properties, according to a recent study.
  • Evening Primrose Oil has been studied in the use of arthritis, but the results have been mixed.
  • Ginger has been studied in the setting of arthritis and joint pain.  The results are unclear.  There are current ongoing research studies.
  • Grape seed extract is known to contain anti-oxidants.
